Diwali Dazzles at The Pierre: A Celebration of South Asian Culture

An electrifying evening unfolded at The Pierre Hotel on New York City’s Upper East Side, as the South Asian community gathered to celebrate Diwali, the annual festival of lights. Co-hosted by Jessel Taank, Sai De Silva, and Ubah Hassan—stars from “The Real Housewives of New York City”—this year’s event was not only a cultural commemoration but also a philanthropic endeavor, raising funds for World Central Kitchen.

The luxurious affair boasted a star-studded guest list, with industry leaders and international figures in South Asian entertainment joining in the festivities. The event’s architect, Anjula Acharia, has been pivotal in bringing “South Asian culture to the forefront of the zeitgeist,” and her efforts have transformed this celebration into a marquee event in New York City. The host committee featured prominent personalities such as Huma Abedin, Simone Ashley, Avantika Vandapanu, Tan France, Hasan Minhaj, Jay Sean, and Jessel Taank.

Guests were treated to a captivating performance by Indian superstar Nora Fatehi, who is followed by nearly 50 million Instagram users. Her energetic act, along with dancers from Amit Shah’s AATMA Performing Arts, set the stage for an unforgettable night as attendees joined the dance floor. The menu offered a fresh take on traditional Indian, Moroccan, and South Asian dishes, complementing the evening’s dress code of “South Asian black tie.” Guests donned intricately beaded and embroidered saris and dresses, adding to the evening’s allure.

Anjula Acharia opened the night with heartfelt words that resonated with the spirit of the occasion.

“I’m so happy to see faces, new and old, here tonight – your dreams, ambitions, hard work, and dedication make this community as strong as it is today. I’m so glad to honor you all” – Anjula Acharia

The event also featured champagne towers and proprietary cocktails infused with contemporary South Asian flavors like tamarind and coconut. Notable designers such as Sabyasachi Mukherjee and Falguni Shane Peacock were among the attendees, highlighting the event’s significance in the fashion world.

Reflecting on the cultural significance of the evening, Avantika Vandapanu shared her sentiments.

“Being Indian in America, somewhat rarely do we have moments like this where you’re truly with your community and peers in the arts as well. It just feels like an amalgamation of all the things I love” – Avantika Vandapanu
