A Refreshing TikTok Trend: Doctor-Approved Chia-Seed Water

Drinking chia-seed water has emerged as a doctor-approved trend on TikTok, capturing the attention of millions. This health trend is not only easy to make at home but also offers numerous benefits, according to experts. Anna Emanuel, the lead integrative-medicine physician at Love, a wellness center in El Segundo, California, describes chia seeds as a “nutritional powerhouse” that can support hydration and nutrient absorption.

Chia seeds are versatile and can be incorporated into various dishes.

“Chia seeds can be enjoyed as pudding, blended into smoothies, sprinkled on yogurt or salads, or used as a thickening agent in baked goods,” – Dr. Emanuel

This flexibility makes them a staple in the health-food world, having evolved far beyond their humble beginnings as Chia Pet planters. Significantly, when mixed with liquid, chia seeds can expand over ten times their original size. This expansion not only aids digestion but also enhances nutrient absorption.

“Soaking chia seeds makes them easier for the body to digest and enhances nutrient absorption,” – Dr. Emanuel

The trend has gained traction thanks to influencers like Hyram Yarbro and Cait Kiernan, amassing 14.4 million views on TikTok. Unlike other viral health trends, such as drinking chlorophyll or “sunscreen contouring,” which are not doctor-approved and can be harmful, chia-seed water provides a safe and beneficial alternative.

The trend highlights how social media can positively influence wellness habits when guided by accurate information. The use of chia seeds as a thickening agent in baked goods further showcases their versatility.

“Unlike flaxseeds, chia seeds don’t need to be ground up to be more bioavailable,” – Dr. Emanuel

This attribute makes them an easy addition to any diet, providing a simple way to reap their health benefits.

Despite the positive aspects of this trend, some TikTok practices remain concerning. Doctors hope for platform companies to include disclaimers on beauty content to inform users about potential unverified or dangerous methods.
