The Metropolitan Opera launched its new season with grandeur and elegance, presenting the premiere of “Grounded,” an opera that delves into the life of a female fighter pilot adapting to drone warfare. The event took place at the Wu Tsai Theater and was attended by around 600 people, including celebrities such as Christine Baranski, Susan Sarandon, Patricia Clarkson, and Josh Groban. The gala not only celebrated the new opera but also honored philanthropists Larry A. Silverstein and Klara Silverstein, raising over $3.8 million for the orchestra.
The opera “Grounded,” written by Jeanine Tesori and directed by Michael Mayer, captivated the audience with its compelling narrative. Emily D’Angelo, a rising mezzo-soprano, delivered a remarkable performance as Jess, the fighter pilot at the heart of this modern tale. Jeanine Tesori, reflecting on her work, remarked, “You just don’t know until you know.”
The evening was a glamorous affair, with attendees donning formal attire that included vibrant crimson and emerald ball gowns. The event featured a 75-minute program that included performances by Josh Groban and the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. Attendees enjoyed a cocktail reception, dinner, and a performance of the opera.
Peter Gelb, the general manager of the opera, took a moment to lead a round of “Happy Birthday” before dinner was served, adding a personal touch to the event. He also noted the current political climate with the statement, “With all of the political lies taking place in this election cycle.”
The gala served as a significant fundraiser for the Metropolitan Opera, supporting the orchestra and its programs. This year’s celebration marked a new chapter for the orchestra with a newly signed collective bargaining agreement, which includes a 30% raise for its 97 musicians over three years.
Christine Baranski was seen escorting her co-star from the opera “Gilded Age” to the event, adding to the star-studded atmosphere. Renée Elise Goldsberry commented on the evening’s attire, stating, “This feels a bit like armor.”
The gala concluded with a grand staircase exit, where cheerful partygoers descended into the night. Among those reflecting on the event was Jeanine Tesori who expressed sentimentality with her statement, “Who would ever have thought that his granddaughter would fulfill his dream.”
