How to Combat A Growing Concern of Iron Defiency in the US

A recent study has revealed that nearly one in three adults in the United States is iron deficient, raising significant health concerns across the nation. Iron plays a crucial role in the body’s growth and development and is essential for hormone production. Despite the availability of effective iron replacement therapies, a substantial number of individuals remain untreated for this deficiency. This article delves into the findings of the study and offers guidance on boosting iron intake.

Medications like GLP-1, including Ozempic, Wegovy, and Zepbound, are popular for aiding weight loss but may contribute to nutrient deficiencies, including iron. The study found that more than half of those with iron deficiency are not receiving any treatment. Alarmingly, only 22–35% of women and 12–18% of men with iron deficiency are taking iron supplements.

Iron can be obtained from dietary sources, where heme iron is more easily absorbed by the body than non-heme iron. Foods high in heme iron include lean beef, lamb, and chicken. Certain plant-based foods also offer heme iron, providing options for those who prefer not to consume red meat. Consuming foods rich in vitamin C, like citrus fruits and leafy greens, alongside iron-rich foods can further enhance absorption.

It is advisable to avoid consuming calcium-rich foods with iron-rich meals since calcium can inhibit iron absorption. For those unable to meet their iron needs through diet alone, taking an iron supplement may be beneficial. However, it is crucial to work closely with a healthcare provider to determine the appropriate course of treatment. Monitoring lifestyle habits such as hydration, nutrient intake, and exercise can aid in maintaining adequate iron levels and motivate realistic changes.
