Particularly popular among Gen Z, nearly a quarter of this demographic has embraced the trend, according to a survey by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM). In an era where health priorities have shifted significantly, especially since the pandemic, sleep has become a focal point for many. This trend reflects a broader societal shift towards wellness, as Americans increasingly turn to platforms like TikTok for advice on improving their sleep habits.

The rise of sleepmaxxing highlights several key strategies and concerns in the pursuit of better sleep. Dr. Jade Wu, a sleep medicine psychologist, warns against spending excessive awake time in bed as it can diminish sleep quality. Instead, she advises engaging in activities like yoga or reading a book to promote relaxation without compromising sleep. Furthermore, Dr. Anne Marie Morse from the AASM recommends a consistent sleep schedule, emphasizing the importance of going to bed and waking up at the same time each day. Such practices help regulate the body’s internal clock, making natural sleep patterns easier to maintain.

Similarly, the “sleepy girl mocktail,” a concoction involving tart cherry juice and magnesium powder, has gained attention but remains scientifically unverified.
