Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen have realized a long-held dream by opening a store for their luxury fashion label, The Row, in the heart of Paris. Situated at the elegant corner of 1 rue du Mont Thabor and rue d’Alger, this new location represents more than just a retail space; it embodies the sisters’ artistic vision and love for the City of Light. The store offers an inviting blend of comfort and sophistication, with its meticulously curated design reflecting the Olsens’ unique style.
The choice of location was carefully considered, as the Olsens sought a space that felt both comfortable and casual without sacrificing elegance. Despite its chic Parisian setting, the store is adorned with exquisite furniture and objets that contribute to its relaxed atmosphere. The sisters initially aimed to establish their presence in Paris before venturing into London. However, finding the perfect space proved challenging until now.
Designing the store was a labor-intensive process, involving peeling back layers and stripping away unnecessary elements to reveal a harmonious interior. Mary-Kate and Ashley frequently visited every three weeks to oversee the progress, ensuring that their vision came to life. Their approach was instinctual, embracing imperfections to create a genuine and inviting atmosphere.
“We don’t really try to get it right,” said Mary-Kate.
The store features a variety of original architectural elements, such as exposed industrial piping and tubular racks, alongside a striking monumental stonework arch. These components contribute to a sense of authenticity and character. The Olsens wanted the store to feel like a home, offering a cozy ambiance and fostering a sense of community. This aspiration is evident in their California-inspired aesthetic, which includes custom-built seating and a modernist coffee table.
Understanding that their store is part of a living neighborhood, the Olsens designed the space to be welcoming to passers-by. During the day, open windows invite curious onlookers to peer inside, while nighttime lighting creates a warm, homey glow. Although they typically avoid decorating their windows, the store’s design almost compels them to make an exception.
“But it would have made a great holiday decoration,” Mary-Kate remarked.
The store showcases an array of high-end furniture and objets, including a rare 1900s ivory lacquered cuboid chair and a pair of 1940s white wheatsheaf sconces. These pieces highlight the Olsens’ appreciation for unique design elements and their commitment to creating an exceptional shopping experience.
“We want the experience to be unique and special,” Ashley emphasized.
Despite its prime location in a competitive neighborhood, the Olsens are determined to offer something distinct. Rather than conforming to traditional retail norms, they focus on delivering an unforgettable experience for their customers. This ethos aligns with their broader approach to fashion and business.
“You need to be very agile, and to make adjustments, so opening the doors and learning one day at a time… that’s very us,” Ashley explained.
Excited about this new venture, Mary-Kate and Ashley view their first Parisian store as an opportunity for growth and learning. They remain open to adjustments as they settle into their new neighborhood, eager to build connections with the local community.
“We will have special pieces in the mix, but we think it will lean more towards the casual,” Mary-Kate noted.
